Why Guest Speaking Matters

Hearing directly from professionals helps students better understand what careers actually look like beyond the classroom. A short conversation with someone working in the field can help students connect their learning to real-world opportunities, ask questions about career pathways, and begin to imagine themselves in different professions.

Even a single visit can have a lasting impact on how students think about their future.

A Low-Commitment Way to Make a Big Impact

Guest speaking is designed to be flexible and manageable for busy professionals.

Most guest speaking opportunities:

  • last 20–45 minutes

  • can be scheduled around your availability

  • may be in-person or virtual

What a Guest Speaker Visit Might Look Like

Every classroom is different, but a typical visit might include:

  1. A brief introduction to your organization and your role

  2. A short overview of how you entered your field

  3. Discussion of what a typical workday looks like

  4. Advice for students interested in the industry

  5. Time for students to ask questions

Teachers will work with you beforehand to make sure the visit fits their class and students.

Why Community Professionals Participate

Many guest speakers find the experience rewarding because it allows them to:

  • inspire students who may not yet know about their career field

  • help students better understand real-world workplaces

  • strengthen connections between local schools and industry

  • introduce students to opportunities within their community

Your insight can help students see possibilities they may not have considered before.
